February 19, 2015
MUTEK launches into its 16th edition with 5 nonstop days of internationally recognized artistic excellence, running from May 27 to 31 at Montréal's Musée d'art contemporain (MAC) and various other venues in the heart of the city. Expect another year of mind and body bending artistry operating at the leading edge of technology, music, digital creativity and live performance.
As digital and electronic culture has matured and evolved, MUTEK is proud to maintain its unique position and reputation for emphasizing live performance in this ever-mutating realm. A core value since its inception, MUTEK seeks out and promotes original creations that unfurl in real time, underlining the immediacy and sense of happening that the whole festival thrives on, for both performers and audiences alike.
With Montréal as its backdrop, MUTEK has always played on the special character and convivial spirit the city is famous for. Visitors enter a sophisticated urban setting filled with multi sensory adventures that include the Quartier des spectacles, world famous restaurant culture and the high spring energy that fills the streets. The second edition of the city-wide Digital Spring, bringing together practitioners and institutions who elaborate the digital arts, promises an even richer encounter for tourists, as well as locals, who use MUTEK and its context as a vehicle to rediscover their own hometown.
We are delighted to share the first strokes of what is shaping up to be another sensational chapter in our storied history. This initial list will only grow more expansive over the coming weeks as it incorporates a host of new names, more Canadian performers, special projects and its daytime conferences, with over 100 artists expected to grace the festival's stages for what will be another unforgettable and multidimensional experience:
ANDY STOTT (UK) / ATOM™ & ROBIN FOX present DOUBLE VISION (CL/DE/AU) / ATOM™ & TOBIAS (CL/DE) / BOUNDARY (CA) / COBBLESTONE JAZZ (CA) / DBX (US) / JAMES HOLDEN (UK) / JOHN TEJADA (US) / KIASMOS (IS) / LUCY (IT) / MILLIE & ANDREA (UK) / P.TRAFFORD (CA) / POLE & MFO (DE) / RICHARD DEVINE (US) / RIVAL CONSOLES (UK) / RROSE (US) / SESSION VICTIM (DE) / SHERWOOD & PINCH (UK) / STEFFI (NL) / STRATEGY (US)
With our knack for anticipating newcomers and emergent talent, we are pleased to present the nouveau classical meets electronica of KIASMOS, a project helmed by composer Ólafur Arnalds and musician and electronic producer Janus Rasmussen; RIVAL CONSOLES, who also mines a classically trained background to make emotionally resonant electronic music debuts; SESSION VICTIM are a German duo who bring musicianly flair to their live house and disco concoctions; American producer and musician STRATEGY straddles a multitude of genres across his extensive discography with particular aptitudes along the dub and house axis; and local underground soul, P.TRAFFORD showcases his heady, undulating beats and textures.
We are particularly thrilled to present the North American premiere of DOUBLE VISION, a synaesthetic, frequency-fluctuating spectacle built around the laser art of ROBIN FOX and the electronic sound productions of ATOM™, the genre shifting persona of UWE SCHMIDT, a long time acolyte of the festival. And for the first time, the festival hosts RICHARD DEVINE, master of modulars, and a veteran artist whose work in the realm of immaculate, cerebral IDM is world-renowned.
Two immense nights at Métropolis have been designed in collaboration with Red Bull Music Academy this year, magnifying our long running relationship: on Friday, an intense showcase of big room contemporary techno with the enigmatic RROSE, a gender bending producer whose productions blur the line between the muscle of the genre and more esoteric atmospheres; Berlin based STEFFI known for her DJ prowess as a resident at Panorama Bar will present the North American premiere of her live show, based on her recent critically acclaimed full length; and Stroboscopic Artefacts label boss LUCY will perform a commanding and epic set of his rarefied machine music.
On Saturday it's all about dynamic duos: beginning with the old school meets new school derivations of dub from ADRIAN SHERWOOD, behind the pioneering punk meets dub label On U Sound, and PINCH, the alias of futuristic dub(step) producer ROB ELLIS; there's the jungle-techno mayhem explored by ANDY STOTT and MILES WHITTAKER (DEMDIKE STARE) as MILLIE & ANDREA; the long running, live unfolding, techno-acid mingling of TOBIAS FREUND and UWE SCHMIDT as ATOM™ & TOBIAS; and techno kingpin DAN BELL brings his hardware set as DBX to the stage with producer JOHN TEJADA recreating his rhythms and sequences on a live drum kit.
This year sees the triumphant return of several groundbreaking and established artists to the festival - from ANDY STOTT, whose brooding song based, bottomless bass music has enjoyed recent cross-over successes; JAMES HOLDEN's new live show features a drummer and his spirited manning of modular and custom synths; Canadian trio COBBLESTONE JAZZ, led by tech-jazz genius MATHEW JONSON are back with their sweet keyboard licks and trippy swing; STEFAN BETKE aka POLE reconvenes his pristine brand of digital dub at the festival, with his first ever audiovisual show; and BOUNDARY, a live cinematic electronic project birthed at MUTEK 2013, led by Montréaler GHISLAIN POIRIER, comes home in an even more realized iteration, featuring keyboardist DAN THOUIN.
Get familiar with the music of our first wave of artists with this special mix by MUTEK programmer Vincent Lemieux, and mastered by our partner LANDR.
