The Future is Trash: A Speculative Archaeology Workshop*

Too often we talk about possible futures (more often defaulting to ‘the future’ rather than a multitude of possibilities) without questioning the perspectives and power structures that frame our discussions and predictions. If history is written by the victors, is it also true that narratives about the future are written by those already who have already ‘won’? What does this mean for our accepted definitions of progress and prediction? In this workshop participants will take the role of future historians, creating mythologies, museum wall texts, and folktales around what appear—to us now—to be very mundane, everyday, even throwaway objects. By stripping them of their accepted context and imagining their longer afterlives what can we learn about how storytelling shapes our assumptions and beliefs about how we view both multiple futures and the present?
