Pulling from an impressive number of sonic quarters—jazz harmonies, classical cuts and experimental storytelling—Gabriel Vinuela’s dreamlike voyage through beat-driven melodies as viñu-vinu is informed by an utmost commitment to organic processes and spontaneity.
viñu-vinu is the electronic music alias for Montréal-based pianist, keyboardist, composer and producer Gabriel Vinuela, who holds bachelor degrees in classical piano and jazz piano performance. He won several prizes and grants, including the 2010 TD Grand Prize for Jazz at the Montréal International Jazz Festival with his group Parc X Trio. By all accounts a prolific and scrupulous musician, Gabriel fronts the impro-electro-jazz collective Extended Family, co-leads Parc X Trio and keeps up his own electronic experiments under the alias viñu-vinu. He’s also the co-founder of local jazz label Multiple Chord Music and a board member of L’OFF Festival de Jazz de Montréal. As viñu-vinu, he has self-released two EPs and is readying his first LP, to be released on L.A.-based Mystery Circles in the fall of 2018. His lush, carefully crafted electronic tapestries feature field recordings front and centre: the textural ambience of Chilean street vendors, the percussive bustle of Czech train stations and the expansive tones of remote Quebec forests.
Expect live ambient explorations and intertextural encounters of the highest order as Vinuela threads it all together into colourful, gorgeously evocative soundscapes that let listeners tap into his numerous, ever-evolving musical frequencies.
