JASSS - Weightless

In reverberating rhythms and lingering synth tones, jazz-like instrumental interplays and African polyrhythms, JASSS weaves styles into a boundless atmosphere where dark moods shift and align with lighter flourishes and thoughtful precision.

From a small village on the North coast of Spain, Jiménez Alvarez moved to The Netherlands to follow her investigation of genre-crossing electronic music that reaches out towards the dance floor only to transport us well beyond. Immersed in new live forms of electronic music and manipulating her own field recordings among other samples, she soon made a move to Berlin. There she stretched her experiments technically and emotionally in film scores, her own studio productions and, by 2015, as a notable DJ under the moniker JASSS. After unleashing EPs of dark, mystical techno, she headed straight for an avant-garde approach that cooked industrial soundscapes with bass-heavy club tracks on her debut album, Weightless—challenging ambient expectations with psychedelic Eastern melodies, metallic noise and drone-swarmed bass.

Most recently, JASSS has curated Mannequin nights of leftfield sounds for Berghain's experimental Saüle room, brought her dense rhythmic soundscapes to Berlin's Atonal festival and CTM, joined Sónar in Reykjavik and Barcelona, Rewire in the Hague, and Dekmantel in Amsterdam. She invokes a mysterious atmosphere at MUTEK, her live analog set an evolving, meditative experiment made to be witnessed.
