Motors and music come together in the magnificently gothic, witchy trance of Swedish mystery woman TMRW. Influenced by the mental and physical geographies of Västernorrland County in northern Sweden, where she was born, and by years of euphoric cruising along deserted streets, her music is all throbbing beats, seductive menace, cut-up samples and late-night rhythmic intrigue.
A travelling carnival, or tivoli, that visited TMRW’s village in northern Sweden annually, counts as a strange early influence—or rather, the electronic trance soundtrack that seemed to arrive with it. In the pre-Internet world this was her first exposure to a strange alien music that would shape her. The daughter of a Volvo factory worker and an oil tanker operator, her interest in music production was sparked when a friend lent her a drum machine and a half-broken Polysix synthesizer. The enigmatic performer, who keeps a tight lid on any info publicly disseminated about her project, described first recording cassettes in the trunk of her Volvo 940. In keeping with the abundant possible auto analogies in her life, her entrancing debut EP Ångerland, betrays something reminiscent of Cronenberg’s Crash or Winding Refn’s Drive: all neon-lit thumps and dystopian demolishment.
Making her debut in Canada, TMRW has already played Greenland’s Nuuk Nordisk Kulturfestival last fall, and has been travelling around as a member of the European Keychange cohort. Expect her to seduce and challenge in equal measure.
